UK Woman Stole Thousands to Feed Internet Casino Addiction
A UK woman who stole thousands of pounds from the travel agency where she worked in order to pay off internet casino debts has been sentenced to a year in prison.
Cindy Streets took £26,100 from the Exeter branch of Lets Go Travel in order to feed her internet casino addiction. She stole the money over a period of four weeks.
Streets, who is 21 years old, racked up a huge amount of debt while playing at internet casino sites on her five credit cards. Her boyfriend, who is also an internet casino addict, encouraged her to keep playing in order to win the money back. However, even when Streets won £5,000, she used the winnings to play for more, and then subsequently lost the winnings and incurred even greater debt.
Stephen Nunn, an attorney who will argue Streets’ case, largely blamed the influence of the young woman’s boyfriend for her internet casino addiction.
“Her boyfriend told her that he would get lucky and that with the next wedge of money they would win, but it did not happen. It all happened over a short period of time and escalated beyond any expectations. Her misplaced loyalty and immaturity resulted in her getting into debt and then supporting her boyfriend in a desperate attempt to get out of it.”
